Tow trucks, also known as recovery trucks or wreckers, are specialized vehicles modified from standard chassis to meet specific needs. Depending on customer requirements, they can be designed as flatbed tow trucks, integrated tow trucks, or split tow trucks. The quality of modifications can vary between manufacturers, and so can the price. However, even the best quality tow trucks need proper maintenance to ensure optimal performance. Here are some essential points to consider for the daily use of tow trucks:

1. Inspect the Hydraulic System:

  • After each job, check the hydraulic system valves, cylinders, and pipeline connections for leaks. Tighten or replace seals immediately if any leaks are detected.

2. Check for Damage:

  • Regularly inspect lifting, towing, and related accessories for damage or detachment.

3. Lubrication:

  • Follow the maintenance manual to apply lubricating grease to each lubrication point, except for the hydraulic cylinder piston rod, which should not be greased.

4. Clean Hydraulic Winch Steel Cables:

  • Every month, remove and clean all steel cables on the hydraulic winch with specified oil.

5. Replace Hydraulic Oil:

  • For new tow trucks, replace the hydraulic oil within six months. If the hydraulic oil appears dirty or aged, replace it immediately. Manufacturers recommend replacing the hydraulic oil at least once a year to prevent increased impurities, viscosity, and resistance, which can weaken hydraulic expansion.

6. Use Specified Hydraulic Oil:

  • Always use the designated hydraulic oil to avoid damage to the hydraulic system.

7. Adding Hydraulic Oil:

  • When adding hydraulic oil, operate the gear pump at low speed. Move the telescopic, folding, and boom cylinders back and forth 2-3 times, and rotate the hydraulic winch in both directions to ensure air is expelled through the air vent holes on the tank cap. The hydraulic oil level should be between the scale mark and the lower limit on the oil gauge. Use a filter with an accuracy of no less than 25 microns when adding hydraulic oil.

8. Clean Multi-way Valves:

  • For ordinary multi-way valves, unscrew the relief valve by 30 degrees or fully, use a clean plug to prevent oil loss, and clear debris at the indicated arrow point. Lift the valve core with a cross-lift end, repeat several times, and add a small amount of hydraulic oil until impurities are removed through the small hole.
